Some dredge owners employ 2 crews consisting of 1 dredge operator, 1 engineer, 2 Deckhands sometimes 1 sand-field person per crew for the day and night shift of 12hours respectively, one crew each shift, for 6 days in a week and 6-8 hours for each crew on Sunday. All this without leave or time-off and when a staff complains, he is threatened with suspension or outright sack by these dredge owners using the high unemployment rate in the country to their advantage. It really feels good to be back writing articles on this blog again after about 5 months. It has been a busy period as I had to handle a site analysis and site set up job for reclamation work somewhere in the southern part of Nigeria. Also, a difficult decision making period too as I was also offered a job contract by a Qatari dredging firm based in Qatar, but due to some personal reasons, I was unable to honour that particular contract.
