FEELING CHEATED? HERE'S HOW TO ESTIMATE/CALCULATE SAND QUANTITY

Happy new month esteemed readers!

As we gradually move towards the close of 2018, I thought to drop a post relating to sand, how to calculate and estimate its quantity so you won't feel cheated by sellers.

The density of sand is affected by whether the sand is packed (rammed) or loose, and whether it is wet or dry.

When it is packed, the grains of sand are forced into a tighter formation and more matter is in the volume.

When the sand is wet, water is in the sand, also affecting the total matter in the volume.

The mean density of the different conditions of sand are as follows:

Loose Sand: 1442 kg/m3. This dry sand has been moved or otherwise agitated to loosen the natural packing process.

Dry Sand: 1602 kg/m3. This is sand in its natural undisturbed form where it has been partially packed by rain and gravity over time but is now dry.

Packed Sand: 1682 kg/m3. This is sand that has been manually or mechanically packed (rammed)

Wet Sand: 1922 kg/m3. This is sand that has been standing in a natural setting and naturally compressed that is now wet.

Wet Packed Sand: 2082 kg/m3. This is packed sand that is also nearly saturated with water.

In dredging, the density used most times is that of the dry sand which approximately is 1.602 metric tons. This implies that

1metric ton = 1/1.602

1metric ton = 0.624m³

Therefore, to convert any volume of sand from cubic metre to tons, you divide the volume by 0.624. For example.

To convert 13 cubic meters (m³) of sand to tons :

13/0.624 = 20.83 tons.

Also to convert from tons to cubic metre, all you have to do is to multiply whatever volume of sand in tons by 0.624. For example

To convert 30tons of sand to the cubic metre will be expressed as follows

30×0.624 = 18.72m³

In conclusion, having the knowledge of this little conversions will help you avoid been shortchanged thus maximizing profit.
